Do stores still get reimbursed if they accept an expired coupon? Why will some take them and some don't?

Even with the same stores, I have had cashiers not accept them, but others do. I hate to think I would be getting them in trouble over saving myself $1.00, but I wonder it every time I check out and give an expired coupon. Does anyone know how it works?Do stores still get reimbursed if they accept an expired coupon? Why will some take them and some don't?
Stores have one week from expiration date to collect on coupons. Not one store in my area will take an expired coupon. Those cashiers that do, must reimburse the store for their error. Different stores have different standards and processes. Sometimes store owners have to eat the cost of accepting expired manufacturers coupons - thus motivating them to not accept the coupons after expiration. Something similar happens a lot with franchises, where the franchisor will have a national campaign, but outsource the actual cost to the franchisee. Sometimes, big chains have the purchasing power and profit margins to accept competitors coupons and expired coupons.

The answer depends on the store. :)
